Mount Vernon and Alexandria

The delights of Alexandria today and a trip to Mount Vernon, former home of George Washington. A wonderful house set in some very picturesque gardens on the banks of the Potomac River. A splendid day indeed.

Howard and I spent an hour wandering round the grounds of Mount Vernon while Matt drove around to avoid the car park (which was full). As with many former homes of the famous, everything has been kept in a near original state and looked after.

The whole estate covers some 8,000 acres, some of which was given over to farming. Washington lived here from 1754 and both George and his wife, Martha, are buried in the family tomb.

We didn’t venture into the house itself (time and costs) but the walk around was enjoyable.

Alexandria is a wonderful town. The Old Town retains much of it’s past and looks like a great place to live, although extremely expensive given the prices of the town houses. The three of us embarked on a brief pub crawl for the evening, taking in dinner and beer at the excellent Union Street Bar, beer at the King Street Blues Bar, shopping in a couple of bookstores, more “classic” bar drinking at Murphey’s and ending up in Starbucks.

The Bar and Bookstore Tour ended in Borders on the way home. I bought the Terrell Owens autobography “Catch This” since he’s now an Eagle. It does look like it was written by a 10 year old so shouldn’t take too long to read.

Kicked Matt’s ass on Madden as well just to round off the day.
