Washington DC

Christine and Howard left on Sunday. With Matt taking Howard to the airport I had the day free to watch a whole load more football. There’s something thoroughly enjoyable about watching a whole load of football on a Sunday. Steelers beat the ‘skins, which was nice!

As an added bonus with the Eagles beating the Gnats they won a 4th consecutive NFC East Division title. Had a Philly Cheese Steak for dinner as celebration and ended the day watching an excellent snow game between Denver and Oakland at Mile High.

Starbucks, Washington DCSpent the day in DC. Matt and I had to drive round most of Alexandria to find somewhere to park to get the Metro in. The US is definitely not geared up for those with cars to use public transport. A distinct lack of parking at the Metro stations suggests that you should either own a car or use public transport, not both.

Once in DC we had a wander up towards Capitol Hill and then headed off to the corner of 7th and E for an excellent meal at the District Chophouse and Brewery (Bourbon Beef pizza for me). Still learning the subtleties of tipping over here.

Back down Constitution Avenue to the American History museum which wasn’t too interesting so we didn’t go round all of it. Continuing further down to try and get at the Whitehouse but access only takes you so far. Maybe George W doesn’t feel so safe after his 2nd election.

That pretty much sums up all there is to do in DC. There are a plethora of other museums but in terms of monuments and buildings there’s not that much to see.

Metro back to Alexandria, a quick drive round Matt’s hotel and home, stopping off for soup at Palerno’s. Had a nap after we got back to Fredericksburg before a spot of midnight shopping at Giant.
