In The Gaol and Up the Towers

Spent yesterday being a tourist.

Visited the Old Melbourne Gaol. One wing of the place is open to the public. Many of the death masks for inmates who were hanged, including the most famous of all – Ned Kelly, are kept here inside the cells which is a little spooky on first sight.

Various floors and cells tell the story of some of the previous inmates. Those who were hanged and a few stories of humour, tragedy, corruption and murder. Artefacts show the brutality that is severely lacking these days in the prison system. Flogging and anti-masturbation devices remain merely as props in the barbaric carnival.

Wandered through the CBD down Collins St to the Rialto building (stopping off at a Starbucks along the way) which very kindly charges people to go up to their observation deck and look out over Melbourne and beyond.

It was a damn clear day so the views to the Dandenongs were clear, as were all the areas around Melbourne. Tried out the new camera and it’s zoom capabilities, which are infinitely better than the old camera!

The views were excellent and so took a load of photos of Melbourne From Very High Up. Also saw the cheesy pro-Melbourne video beforehand. I love promo videos like this one. Everything is crammed in with some stirring music and a voice over that initially makes you want to retch before stirring the soul into wanting to go everywhere and see and do everything.
