One brief final morning in Alice Springs. I have decided that I could quite happily live here. There is a beauty and remoteness that appeals to me. Still, it is time to head back Melbourne and fly back the way I came. Sort of. I had a discussion during the Face the Outback tour about whether it was acceptable to fly anywhere while touring round Australia. Their theory being that it simply should not be done. I disagreed. Having flown into Melbourne before and seen some of this country from the air.
Felt rough yesterday morning. Really very, very rough. Too rough. As though someone had come in during the night and lined my mouth with felt and started excavations in my head. Struggled to get going which was a pain as Alice was warming up fast. Air con saved my life! Most of the group left early on, so leaving only a few of us in Alice. After going back to bed for a couple more hours I was feeling slightly better and so headed off into town.
Two relaxing days photographing Alice Springs, NT, Australia. Warm, peaceful and a great rest after Facing the Outback.
Another 4.30am start. The worst yet. Went to the toilet and couldn’t find my way back to the campsite. Had to head back to the toilet block and try again. Completely missed breakfast. Although today, I’d had the foresight to have coffee as quickly as possible. Everyone else had packed up when I finally got back. This morning’s walk was King’s Canyon. Choice of through it (easy) or over it (hard). Wandering through it was peaceful enough. A few other tourists and a great number of birds about the place.

This idea of early starts maybe isn’t as good as first thought. Maybe it was the beer last night that kept me awake. Maybe I just wanted to continue the dream I was having about Niamh. Adam’s recurring chorus of “Wakey! Wakey!” became annoying after a while. The lack of coffee was something I couldn’t cope with.

Awake at 4.30am. Visiting this part of the world has its beauty and seeing the sunrise on Uluru and Kata Tjuta became one of those moments in life when you realise that life is worth living. All the driving and late nights make for a wonderful sleep so alighting the swag this early wasn?t a problem and after the usual breakfast and a brief shower we set fire to our shoes and set off hot foot to one of the many suitable viewing points for these rocks that dominate the skyline.
