Another Trip to Melbourne Zoo
Spent the day at Melbourne Zoo. This was a longer, more tranquil day compared to the first visit. It was a hot one so frequent rests and a few drinks along the way helped. I also had chance to see various areas and animals I’d missed on the first visit. Where’s Camille Saint-Saëns when you need him?
Melbourne Zoo began life in Richmond but moved to it’s present location in Royal Park in the 1860s. Once free, the zoo housed lions, tigers, bears and monkeys and as the site and zoo were developed the entrance was erected and people were charged to enter. The 1960s saw the development of the Lion Park, the Great Flight Aviary, Butterfly House and arboreal primate enclosure. In the 1980s the Zoo began to be divided and developed into bioclimatic zones – African Rainforest, Asian Rainforest and Australian Bush.
