Adelaide, South Australia

The overnight Greyhound left Melbourne, traversed a fun route out of the city and through some of the smaller towns before hitting the long road to Adelaide. For now it’s goodbye to Melbourne and time to explore somewhere entirely new. I have a pleasurable nervous excitement. It is around 720 Km from Melbourne to Adelaide, it’s dark and I can’t sleep.

Rundle Mall in AdelaideArriving in Adelaide at something around 7am was tough. The weather was already warm and I didn’t have a clue where I was going. Where’s the nearest hostel? Would it not be better to plan a little in future rather than just arriving in a whole new city?

The Shakespeare Hostel on Waymouth St looked like an interesting place. Actually, it was the first place I came across so why the hell not! Who needs planning when a bed is a stone’s throw from the bus terminal?

This early in the morning after a night of travel on the Greyhound is not a great time. I was tired, bleary eyes and about ready to sleep for a while. However, a need for coffee was more pressing. The bus trip had been interesting, if not a little quiet. A few stops along the way at truck stops and gas stations had left a sour taste in the mouth. Must be something about eating dodgy tasting burgers at 3am. Remember to take a bottle of water next time!

Adelaide is a pleasantly laid out city. King St runs down the middle of the CBD with other streets bisecting it. Each one changes it’s name at King St, after all you can’t cross the King!

Breakfast and coffee out the way I had a wander round, just to get some bearings and figure out what there is to do here. I’ve checked in for 7 days. Half made plans suggest Adelaide is a good starting point to get to Alice Springs, probably on an organised tour. Rundle Mall is the shopping street. Trams head to Glenelg from Victoria Square. I just need to find a Coles, Baker’s Delight and Boost and I’ll be set.

The afternoon heated up and I spent the afternoon in the hostel, meeting room-mates and investigating the usefulness of the facilities (I really needed a shower).
