Drifting Through the Week

Apparently it rarely rains in Adelaide, especially in the summer. Naturally, I’ve arrived in time for some rain. It is at this point I realise I’m come away with no kind of coat, jacket or otherwise. The joys of travelling light!

It feels quiet in Adelaide. There never seems to be many people around. Rundle Mall gets busy during the afternoon and early evening but everywhere else just has a few odds and ends of people. Maybe they’re all in church, there’s certainly enough of those to share around the city.

The past couple of days have been spent wandering around the city, exploring points north of the river. Aside from Rundle Mall most of everything else for the tourist in Adelaide seems to be on North Terrace, including the likes of the state parliament and art gallery.

The somewhat weird sculptures behind the parliament still baffle me. Everything is supposed to have meaning in art, even if it is the artists original vision. I can find no information that would suggest to me the reasoning behind the myriad of blocks that stand there.

Heading north through the parkland and over the Torrens River leads to the Adelaide Oval in possibly the world’s most picturesque setting for a internationally renowned cricket ground. Then there is the equally famous St Peter’s Cathedral that stands behind Adelaide Oval.

Back onto North Tce and a small collection of memorabilia from Don Bradman provides a wealth of interest for the cricket fan.

Adelaide is a beautiful city but there does feel like a lack of things to do here. The city was originally built on the premise of freedom. There were never the convicts in Adelaide and a religious freedom has created this ?City of Churches?. It is quiet here. Peaceful and relaxing.

Blocks behind the South Australian Parliament

One thing that shouldn’t be missed in Adelaide in the Pie Floater. This local delicacy is one of the modern delights of food. A pie in pea soup. It’s so simple it’s brilliant and more often than not the pie comes upside down. Sometimes the pea soup is more mushy peas but the Pie Floater should not be missed when in Adelaide.

The rest of my time in Adelaide will be spent doing some minor pieces of work now I’ve found a very good internet caf? and waiting to leave on a trip north. Like the early settlers and explorers I will be heading out from Adelaide into the great unknown, the Flinders’ Ranges, Coober Pedy, Uluru, Kings Canyon and onto Alice Springs.
