The Tram to Glenelg

Monday afternoon and Adelaide is burning. It is incredibly hot today and the humidity levels make being outside oppressive and extremely un-enjoyable. It is an afternoon to worship the God of Air-Con and enjoy a Boost smoothie back at the hostel.

Last night proved to be a fun night out after one of the Aussie contingent at the hostel semi-arranged an Adelaide Pub Crawl which didn’t last as only two bars were visited. Instead there was a lot of beer drunk and pool played, particularly with one sexy English lass who made the night very enjoyable. A hot dog ended the night and quite possibly left me feeling a little queasy this morning.

Take a Tram to GlenelgThe weekend was spent enjoying the delights of Glenelg, a wonderful seaside suburb of Adelaide. Basking in the sunshine and watching the world go by or sampling the delights of oily bodies on the beach. Glenelg is a pleasant extension to Adelaide, small, compact, neat and extremely tidy.

The best way to get from Adelaide to Glenelg is via the tram, leaving from Victoria Square (although there are plans afoot to extend the tram line up to the railway station). The popular beach suburb of Glenelg takes its name from Lord Glenelg (then the British Secretary of State for War and the Colonies) and was established in 1836. This is where Adelaide originally started Colonel William Light and Governor John Hindmarsh proclaimed the province of South Australia.

Glenelg Town Hall, on Moseley Square, is an impressive building which now houses restaurants and museums. The two museums are well worth visiting, particular the Rodney Fox Shark Experience which highlights the shark attack and subsequent survival of Rodney Fox.

Glenelg is also a wonderful palindromic name.
