Lord of the Rings at the Powerhouse

Finally got a good night’s sleep. Feels like the first in a long time. I was in bed by 10pm and the entire hostel seemed to be in bed by 11pm. Clearly, nothing going on so everyone went to bed. Made for a quiet night and didn’t have to listen to the front door closing periodically throughout the night.

The Lord Of The Rings exhibition is in Sydney right now, at the Powerhouse museum. I had all sort of trouble finding the place. Getting on the wrong train and ending up who knows where. Fortunately, I did make it to the museum.

Lord of the Rings at the PowerhouseIt was a very impressive exhibition. There are numerous costumes, props and other paraphenalia connected with the recent movies including the Ring itself, suspended in a tube and highlighting the famous inscription about the One Ring that binds them all. The humour was there with the big/little split camera that allowed friends and couples to be hobbit and normal size.

It sometimes amazes me just how good costumes in movies are. The attention to detail probably goes way beyond the quality of the final movie.

The Lord of the Rings exhibition done, I took time to check out more of the actual Powerhouse Museum. Part history, part education. The Powerhouse is a big place, with some noisy school parties and kids running around but well worth visiting if you’ve got time in Sydney and want to get around more than the standard tourist spots.

Took the monorail trip after the Powerhouse visit. All good fun and far too touristy to be useful. One ticket allows people to go round and around, it’s not that long so the trip around the centre of Sydney and Darling Harbour is a short one. I got off in the city on the second lap. Joe Satriana was in town doing a signing session. The queue was way too long and people were being sent away by the time I figured out what was actually going on.

The wonders of internet cafes. Having a job hunting, photo sharing and general internet using sort of week so far. Maybe it’s Kings Cross or this is usual behaviour but I was sat next to a guy perusing porn on internet, with his hands down his pants very clearly jerking himself off. The next day and I’m sat opposite a woman who slowly swayed her head around as she typed. All very hypnotic and quite scary.

Funniest bloke had only been in half an hour and was demanding his money back. His argument being that they couldn’t charge him $2 for only half an hour’s usage. Naturally, he wasn’t getting his money back. “It’s only $2,” he cried. If that’s the case why was he so agito about it?
