NSW Art Gallery and a real life Rear Window

Quiet couple of days. Not mass nights out. My knee has been killing me. The problem comes and goes but it’s been really bad for a couple of days. Cancelled all plans and spent a day at the hostel and around Darlinghurst Rd. Did the laundry again and began compiling a list of all the places I’ve been in Australia.

We were moved out of our room in Originals hostel. They’re going to rip up the carpet and polish and varnish the floor. Now sleeping in a 10 person room which is a little on the cramped side. Still there are views over Victoria St.

Wolloomooloo

Went down to the Fitzroy Hotel again for a couple of beers. A civilised night out. The first beer’s usually free since we’re all skint backpackers. Nice place. Finished reading Revenge Of The Sith. Thoroughly enjoyed it and now can’t wait for the film to come out. From reading the previous Star Wars novels I’m expecting that there’s a few odds and ends in the book that aren’t in the film but Obi Wan’s breakdown in the Jedi Temple was somewhat moving.

Tuesday night and the view across the road turned into Rear Window. A couple of us were sat chatting over a couple of beers when we noticed an argument in one of the appartments on the other side of Victoria St. A man and woman screamed, shouted and hurled abuse at each other for a while before she went crashing into a window. He left not long after. We didn’t see movement for a while but eventually she was seen leaving the place.

NSW Art GalleryWednesday and with the knee feeling a little less painful I went out to the New South Wales Art Gallery and spent most of the day there. There is some great Australian art mixed in with some of the other foreign artists. Checked out some of Brett Whiteley’s early art which was somewhat plain compared to his later drug fuelled abstract art. Watched a great Punch’n'Judy style show as well. It was for the kids in the place but the guy doing it clearly had some inspiration from Spike Milligan which made it very funny at times.

Got a ticket for the Henry Rollins show in Sydney next month. Guess that means I’ll be staying around for a while but I really want to see him do one of his talking shows and am not missing this opportunity.
