Shock and Awe – Sith Happens
It has been a few days of fun, frivolity and hardcore sex. Hell, I’m in Kings Cross so sex is everywhere but there’s even more in the cinema. 9 Songs. Another in the growing list of sexually explicit offerings, some of which were awful, some which weren’t.
9 Songs follows a brief period in the lives of a couple who spend their time either fucking or going to gigs at Brixton Academy. The music is supplied from the likes of Franz Ferdinand, The Dandy Warhols, The Super Furry Animals and others while the sex develops into some beautiful scenes of oral sex with blindfolds, restraint, fantasy and ejaculation. I was under the impression that 2 things not allowed as yet in movies was male ejaculation and showing penetrative sex. 9 Songs has both.
And so to Monday evening. It was a hostel night out at the Fitzroy Hotel. A AU$7 steak and beer deal. Not to be missed. The downside to the evening. At least 3 hostels were there, thus the place was jam packed solid. Masses of people, food and beer around. Queues stretching up the stairs, down again and into the kitchen. Added to that, my order got screwed up. I had to wait 45 minutes and complain twice before I could eat. That spoiled the day, the evening and subsequently I didn’t stay much longer having finished eating. I didn’t want these people having any more of my money. I went to drink elsewhere.
What then took place over the next two nights were amazing. After an afternoon in Redfern. Went down there to look at a place Viv and Toby are going to be renting. Nice place too, big front room, decent enough kitchen and a pair of great rooms upstairs. Not knowing the area we both got a little lost along the way which caused minor havoc when one of Viv’s friends Andy came down. We somehow managed to all find each other and had a magical mystery tour trying to find a bar which wasn’t very far away where we met up with more friends, including Emma, one very intelligent and beautiful woman, who Viv has been insisting I meet.
Of course, it all sort of paled into significance later on. I was on George St somewhere around 10pm. The queues were stretched around the entire entrance to the cinema. Revenge of the Sith had arrived. 10 of the 17 screens were showing the movie at midnight. So many people there, some dressed up, most not. A bit of a competition in the cinema before the movie to pick the best dressed. Won by a Tusken up against various Jedi, Darth Vaders and a couple of Leias.
It also felt like a return to the good old days of going to the movies. When I was young we’d always cheer at the start of the movie. Somewhere along the way everyone’s stopped doing that and it’s something I miss. Last night we had it all. Everyone cheering the start of the movie, cheering Chewie just for being there, applauding Yoda for being such a cool little green dude!
So much better than Episodes I and II. The opening scenes of the Battle of Coruscant were mind blowing. The lightsaber fights, of which there are a few with various protagonists, were very fast and intense. I cried while Order 66 was being carried out.
I ended up walking back to Kings Cross afterwards. I was on a high. I sat outside and had a text convo with Matt, finally going to bed around 5am.
Just to finally add to the entertainment I was out again last night. Henry Rollins was in town and doing the third of four nights of his talking shows. I love Henry Rollins, his music, his writing and his talking shows. He is an intense man, barely stops working and quite a lot shorter than you’d think.
The show was brilliant. A mix of Aussie references, his exploits making the movie Alibi (with Steve Coogan), meeting with Johnny Ramone before he died, mobile phones, telemarketing revenge and more crazy madness. What struck me leaving the show was that Henry had done a 2 hour show and not touched the bottle of water he’d taken on stage at the start of the show.
A truly memorable couple of days.
