Cairns, Queensland
I was back on the Greyhound on Monday for a long, long journey up to Cairns. Daytime journey, which was pleasant enough. Arrived in Cairns sometime after 9pm. Having got what was possibly the last bed in the hostel on the Esplanade I still ended up going out for a late night walk. Cairns was still alive and it seems like a fun place to be.
Slept in this morning before a long shower and slow breakfast while figuring out what to do. Normally I’d take a walk around somewhere new, just to get my bearings and see what might be of interest. Ended up going through a lot of the photos from the recent days in Queensland.

Laundry then took over after the realisation that I had no clean underwear. Nothing like a few days of Greyhounds and sailing trips to leave you bereft of laundry facilities.
Tuesday was a very hot and very humid with some rain. This is the tropics and it really got bad again yesterday. Fortunately, being a Tuesday, I found solace in the cinema. Went to see Batman Begins with very little knowledge of this new imagination of the Batman legend. I’d enjoyed the more recent Tim Burton Batman movies but they had descended into comedic farce.
Batman Begins takes us back to the beginning. More of the character or Bruce Wayne and what drove him to become the Dark Knight. I didn’t want to leave the cinema afterwards. I wanted to watch the whole thing again. Now I know where I’ve been going wrong with my life.
Wednesday arrived and I was about ready to see some of Cairns. It’s a small place with the regular grid layout for the CBD. Surrounding Cairns are mountains and rainforest. Lots of rainforest. And the sea, of course. This is a launching point for trips out over the Great Barrier Reef. Good fun but it can be expensive. Heading north into the rainforest is what I want to do. There’s a nice 2 day trip up to Cape Tribulation that I’ll be booking on.
Today’s been about work. Doing some odds and ends for folks back in England. The beauty of the internet and working with it is being able to do it anywhere. Half way round the world, conversing via emails. No problem.
Cape Tribulation trip was also booked. Also got a flight back to Melbourne sorted. Staying at Hostel 89 on the Esplanade. The staff here are brilliant, helpful and friendly. The hostel is clean, light and airy and it’s bang on the Esplanade (at number 89, hence the name!).
