The History Apparatus of Melbourne
Quiet time in Melbourne. Rain has come and gone and I’ve been continuing to feel down. The blackened mood has mostly abated now but I’m still feeling lethargic. Maybe I know this time in Australia is coming to an end.
Found myself going to the cinema too many times. Sin City, War of the Worlds and Revenge of the Sith (for a fifth time) were all on offer. It seems like a good way to pass the moments while I figure out what’s going on in my life right now.
Had one of those great backpacker moments when I bumped into some I’d known in Sydney. Kiwi lass who looked frozen. She wasn’t really dressed for the Australian winter even if she was from New Zealand. That’s happened a few times now. I’ve met people here and there then run into them again further down the line.
Also found the slightly bizarre art forms on Russell St. Billy Connolly had spoken fondly of the sculptures and art works around Melbourne. Some may come and go but the great Sunken Library on Swanston St and Purse on Bourke St are familiar.
The “History Apparatus – Vessel, Craft and Beacon” on Russell St. is a strange affair. Looking like a giant cistern ball-cock (it replaced a public toilet) the “History Apparatus – Vessel, Craft and Beacon” represents the past, present and future. Speak to one end and your life will spill from the other.

Further up Russell St is the “Ceremony and Vehicle for Conveying Spirit”. The concept of the journey and the pomp of ceremonial procession are displayed in the structure. It also serves as a vent. Practical Art, as it’s known.
Melbourne is a wonderful mix of architecture. I do like the Forum Theatre on Flinders St. Built in a time of Hollywood’s Golden Age the Forum Theatre has changed on the inside into 2 smaller theatres but the great exterior remains.
