Stupid Kick-Offs

The Premiership has gone mad today. I’m not against a lot of games on a Sunday, there’s the small matter of the UEFA Cup on a Thursday. Perhaps if that was put back to Tuesday and had the Champions League scaled down to have it solely on a Wednesday then there may be more Saturday games.

Oh, wait. UEFA Cup night used to be Tuesday. But the TV and UEFA wanted to split the Champions League over 2 nights to maximise revenue. The UEFA Cup will go the way of the Cup Winner’s Cup eventually.

Personally I’d be happier if all the games were on a Saturday with a live game on Sunday on free-to-air TV. Trouble is, destroy Sky’s monopoly and you’d destroy Sky and given the amount of money they’re paying these days it isn’t going to happen.

But 11.15am for a kick off? On a Sunday morning too? That’s just wrong.

Imagine an NFL game, an AFL game kicking off at this time? It wouldn’t happen! There is a danger of letting TV companies get away with too much.

When sport becomes obsessed with money it dies.

And greetings to everyone visiting from Saira Kahn’s blog. Interesting discussion on the radio this morning.
