5 Common Air Travel Mistakes

  • January 6, 2007

We have all done it. Made fundamental mistakes when travelling by air for that exotic holiday somewhere in a far off land. Your mind is on the destination and not the journey. Air travel can be hot, tiring, stressful but only when you make mistakes in preparing.

Of course, it is possible to take the stress out of air travel. Just remember some simple guidelines before travelling.

1. Pack before you leave home!

You would be amazed at how much easier air travel is when you are packed in advance. No more frantically hunting for that lost passport. The book you have always wanted to read will be in your carry-on bag. Pack the night before and you will be ready on the day itself.

2. Arrived at the airport late?

Always assume traffic will be bad on the way to the airport. There is nothing worse than being sat in traffic as you approach the airport. Missing your flight would be catastrophic. Arrive at the airport as early as possible. You will be closer to the start of the check-in queue and your choice of seat will be greater.

Arriving at an airport with time to spare will never affect your waiting time. After all, you can both wait in the airport lounge and peruse the duty free shops or you can queue with the crowds, waiting to check-in.

3. Prepare for quality air travel

Dehydration is one of the worst problems to beset the traveller. Drink plenty of fluids, particularly water before and during the flight. The air on planes is dry and you will feel the effects if you dehydrate, spoiling the start of your holiday or vacation.

If you suffer from motion sickness then make sure you take your medication before boarding your plane. Do not wait until you feel sick. If a sickness drug makes you drowsy then all the better, you can sleep during the flight.

4. Dress to Fly

Loose clothing is ideal for flying. You will feel so much more comfortable. Sometimes flights can get cold. Keep a sweatshirt of jacket to hand, if you get cold.

5. Know where you are going?

So many people arrive at their destination airport and do not know where to go next. Plan in advance. Know where your hotel is and how to get there. If you are catching connecting flights then give yourself time between flights and ensure that you have time to switch from one terminal to another where necessary.

Enjoy your stress free vacation. Plan in advance and do not let the time be spoilt by bad preparation.
