Further on Up

Late starting and heading out. I meandered around drinking coffee and just enjoying the morning. Christmas is very definitely coming, the weather’s great and I just enjoyed the time watching the world go by.

Around midday I made my way over to the State Library for the next day’s MX/Nintendo give away. More people around this time but then I was on time for it. Some organised madness ensued and a few people went away happy.

It was a bright blue clear sky sort of day and as the afternoon began the temperatures were rising. This was a great day to go and check out the Skydeck in Eureka Tower.

Last time I was here Eureka Tower was just a tall building site. It was completed in 2006 and now has numerous claims to world fame when it comes to tallest residential buildings. The highest of these floors were sold for millions of Aussie dollars. Nice place to live if you can afford it. The name Eureka comes from the old rebellion in Ballarat at the Eureka Stockade.

Floor 88 of Eureka Tower is home to Skydeck, another viewing level similar to the Rialto Observation Deck. I love these observation places and on a day like today the views were going to be good while the heat outside could be counteracted with air con.

The rather fast lift (with what sounded like added aircraft noises) whisks the visitor up to Level 88. It was spectacular and Eureka gives a few different views of Melbourne and the surrounding areas to Rialto although the CBD itself and Docklands is a little more obscured.

What Skydeck does offer are great views of the Domain Parkland, the MCG and tennis centre, Federation Square and Flinders St Station. I spent some time on the Terrace (a nice little outside section) before a bunch of noisy school kids came out. While out there the Edge box came out and did it’s party trick. I’d been lead to believe this was a pure glass box but it wasn’t. I declined the option of spending extra and having a ride in it. That and the school kids who were running around meant it was definitely time to leave.

Lunch on Southbank, keeping in the shade as much as possible before heading back up to Northcote. It was too hot to be outside too much.
