It's Grand to be Lucky

The next drive isn’t a long one. Passing through Norseman the bus heads south to Esperance to buy food and beer and then to Cape Le Grand. Time for a rest and a couple of days by one of the most perfect beaches in the world in the beauty of a cobalt blue bay.

Lucky Bay is our home for 2 nights. Half way through the trip it’s a great place to stop, have a rest and get a good wash (in the sea). The sand at the beach here is rated as one of the best in the world. It is a wonderful place and there are wild kangaroos living here and a rather large goanna.

There’s a camp site here which is on the full side so there’s plenty of other people around but the beach is big and feels quiet. A few of us head round onto the rocks for some sunbathing and snorkelling in the water.

Plenty of fish share the water. A little beach cricket later on, not easy when you’re travelling with Europeans who have no idea how to play!

All the tent dwellers are in a chicken coop but those of us in swags have the freedom to stay by the bus. Good thing since it’s usually myself, Ali and Denise left at night. Much talking about nothing and with a few too many beers numerous conversations get lost in each other confusing each of us.

A new day dawns and the temperature rises quickly early on. I stay behind as everyone else heads off on one of the walks around the coast. It’s a tough walk at the best of times but the heat makes it even worse, fortunately a passing car brings back some of the group and Simo heads off to find the rest.

We’re told the afternoon temperature has hit 45 degrees. The only thing to do is keep out of the sun and when the body temperature gets too high head off into the sea and cool off. There are several trips into the water throughout. A quick shower afterwards to wash off the salt.

I’m not really one for spending days at the beach but it’s great here. We’re joined by another of the Nullarbor Traveller groups on the trip from Perth to Adelaide so it’s another big evening meal and more beers before the camp eventually falls silent and there’s only the 3 of us left.

Just to add to the wonders of nature the young kangaroo joey, who hangs around the beach with mum, climbs back inside her pouch for a while and then climbs out again.
