Nullarbor Traveller Day 10

The surf spots on the Margaret River and a visit to the Wardan Aboriginal Cultural Centre end the trip before finally arriving in Perth.

The Margaret River area is now famous for it’s wine but the area is a great place to visit. There are numerous surf beaches around the coastline. The area is allegedly named after Margaret Wyche, cousin of John Garrett Bussell, who founded Busselton.

The Wardan Aboriginal Cultural Centre offers visitors the chance the experience and learn about the local culture. Aboriginal people have lived in region for more than 55,000 years. The nearby caves around the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park have proved to be a goldmine for archeologists.

The Wardandi people, the traditional owners of the land in the area, share aspects of their culture with visitors in an effort to increase understanding and reconciliation within the community. A 1Km trail leads visitors through parts of their life and shows how many plants are used for food, medicines, weapons and shelters.

The tool making workshop gives a practical demonstration on how the indigenous people made their tools and weapons and our guide through the centre also demonstrated how to start a fire before some good Didgeridoo playing and dance.
