Wandering around York with added Lancaster

With relatives visiting from Australia and a remembrance of French involvement in bomber crews stationed near York it was a good day for a wander round York. The weather also ensured a rather splendid October day in York.

Starting from the Museum Gardens and past King’s Manor (so named because Henry VIII once stayed there) it was up onto the walls at Bootham Bar with a short stretch of York’s Walls around the Minster to Monkbar. This little bit takes in various views of York Minster and the Dean’s house and garden.

The walk around York Minster took in College Street and the current scaffolding on York Minster before watching the end of ceremonies at York Minster.

A memorial ceremony took place at York Minster to honour the French servicemen who flew alongside Bomber Command during the Second World War. Two squadrons were based at Elvington flying the Handley Page Halifax. The flyby after the service (mixed with a march past of the RAF Central Band, RAFA, French Air Force, veterans and Air Training Corps) included an Anglo-French pair with a Rafale and Typhoon, followed by a formation of nine Tucano trainers, 4 Xingus and the pure beauty of the Avro Lancaster. A Hawker Hurricane was parked in St Sampson’s Square for the day.
